There is a product specifically called SMART Board and a lot of other products generally called "smart boards", so that needs to be cleared up so people know how to help you. Does this device have any video inputs? Probably worth it to buy one to test to just find out quickly. Here's a logistical question. If you have decent wireless and network, we have used both AirServer and Reflector software for computers to do this with good success.
Far cheaper then Apple TV and doesnt require extra Can Ipad Hook Up To Smartboard or switching inputs. I've used a simple Lightning to VGA adapter cable to connect to the projector on our Panaboard and it worked out quite well! Don't know about apps or how to do it wirelessly, but in terms of cables lightning to VGA should do.

I have bought AirServer licences for the 24 interactive whiteboards around the school. I had to enable multicasting on the wireless control-unit and install the software on each of the computers and that was it - job done. Therein lies the key benefit of AirPlay. I assume that you are using the board for meetings and presentations. Any or all of a meeting's attendees can present their work without leaving their seats.
It is a native part of the iPad's software. If the iPad and the target computer are on the same iPad range, the computer does not need wireless capability, just a connection to the LAN. Airserver and reflector both look very promising for what we would need. Forgot to mention that they both have free trials so you can make sure it works before you buy.
